Day 6: Favourite Movie Adaption

Persuasion (1995, BBC)
with Ciarán Hinds & Amanda Root

Again, a rather difficult choice. In the end it was between this one, and the Pride and Prejudice adaption of the same year, but I decided on this one mostly because I think it doesn’t receive all the love that it really deserves.

I cannot find anything not to love about this adaption. The cast is perfect, the scenery is lovely and it remains true to the book throughout the entire thing. I’ve heard people say they don’t like this one simply because the actors are not good looking enough, and that really annoys me. Partly because I think that both the leading actors are gorgeous, but mostly because I hate that that should matter so much. Amanda Root is brilliant in this.

So yes. Favourite adaption.

Day 7: Favourite Austen Couple

Anne Elliot & Captain Frederick Wentworth (Persuasion)

I like these two mostly because they are older than the “average” Jane Austen couples. I always have a difficulty with younger couples, in literature as well as in movies/tv-shows or whatever. But these two. They are older, they’re more mature and for some reason that makes the affection seem more real to me. And despite being apart for several years they still love each other, even if they both really try not to. I also really like that it was her mistake rather than his that kept them apart. And at the end of the novel I really feel like they deserve each other. Both have made mistakes, both have grown, and they’ve reached a sort of equal level (equality in a relationship is important for me).
